I’ve never been to Uranus, until now. Vivian and I have stayed at a county campground north of Indianapolis many times as it is conveniently located near our family. It’s a familiar place and in fact, I’ve been coming to Indianapolis for decades. Yet, the Uranus Fudge Factory was unknown to me until friends from Michigan pointed out that it is very close to our campground, and therefore we have no excuse to not visit Uranus. Which we finally did after several years.

My sister and I in front of the fudge factory. No ifs, and, or butts – just go to the Uranus Fudge Factory and see for yourself.
No short supply of fudge or puns at the Uranus Fudge Factory. And they have ice cream too.

Aside from Uranus and visiting family, we came to the area for another reason, which was to have much needed RV maintenance and repairs done in Shipshewana, Indiana. A week there included a few nights in a hotel as our RV had its front cap recoated at Grand Design’s Factory Service in Elkhart. While at the campground, we had our yearly wheel bearing and brake work completed. And as usual, there were small repairs and maintenance needing to be done.

In the heart of Amish country.
Shipshewana South Campground allows RV techs to work on your rig.
While at the RV capital of the world, we visited a couple RV factories. This is one of the Alliance RV factories.
And in the evenings, we enjoyed visiting with our neighbors.
The campground is surrounded by horse farms.

By the time we finished our business at Shipshewana, Labor Day weekend was bearing down on us. When planning our travel itinerary, I always fret over where we will stay over a holiday weekend, namely Memorial, 4th of July or Labor Day. Not far from Michigan, I took advantage of the fact we had an open invitation to park our RV at the home of good friends. I thought Labor Day weekend would be a perfect time to visit them in their country home located not far from Frankenmuth. No reservations required (but a warning is appreciated)!

Visiting our friends’ Jim and Denise at their beautiful home.
Despite growing up in Michigan, I had never been to Frankenmuth, until Jim and Denise took us there.
Frankenmuth is famous for its chicken dinners.
It’s also famous for the Bronner’s Christmas Store – who says Christmas is too commercialized?

But before we arrived at our friends’ home, we had a few days before the weekend campers flocked to the campgrounds to get their final licks in before the fall season. Michigan campgrounds, especially those anywhere near a Great Lake are often filled the entire season as most of them accommodate seasonal campers who return each year. So, I was thrilled to discover Marken Glen, Campground, a county park near Kalamazoo where we parked a few days before the Labor Day holiday.

We also visited friends Marlene & Nels at their home overlooking Lake Michigan, near Grand Haven.

Which brings me back to Uranus. It just goes to show you, no matter how often you come to a place, especially when you visit with an RV, there is always something new to see or experience, and you can find nature most anywhere. And the best part, we got to do all that with family and friends.
